For years, public sector union members have advocated for the passage of the Jack Schwab Worker Safety Act (HB 299). The bill is named after Jake Schwab, who worked for the Erie County Transit Authority and, in 2014, was killed on the job. His worksite lacked adequate safety protections, and there was no OSHA review to address safety concerns after his accident.
We are finally seeing progress in our fight to get Public Sector OSHA Standards in the Workplace. The House passed the legislation( HB 299). However, progress has stalled in the Senate Governmental Operations Committee. We urgently need your assistance to pressure the Committee to bring this legislation up for a vote. The Senate must understand why we need OSHA-like standards for public sector workers.
There are only a few months left in this legislative session, so we need everyone's help in getting the bill voted out of committee and to the Senate floor for a vote.
